Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

It was never going to simmer down was it? After the gamesmanship of the qualifying session, the events of the race were almost guaranteed not to be a dull affair, particularly with the eagerly awaited rain to just add that little extra to the the proceedings, something that ended up not being needed, as it all happened and produced the following reactions.

Well, we’ll start with the controversy right off the bat as Bottas really spiced up the race in under 1 corner.

Given Valtteri’s need for a new contract the conspiracies we’re always going to fly almost immediately with a shunt like that.

Now, we’re not saying that Mercedes would pull a stunt like this, but some teams definitely would.

Staying on the theories, given what some fans seem to believe, this could have actually been a directive from the FIA.

As much as luck has fallen the way of the brit in  recent weeks, there’s nothing more to it than that. The image of just Hamilton lining up on the grid was ripe for ridicule, particularly with those ever present theories.

As anyone whose played the F1 games knows, some elements of the simulation leave a little to be desired.

Anyone whose played an online race and knows what some people behind are prepared to do to win won’t have been surprised in the slightest when the first lap events unfolded.

Mercedes obviously would prefer to have both cars in the points, however if they can’t have that, the placement of Red Bull after isn’t exactly the worst thing for them.

Those rumours of foul play are going to have fuel for a little while longer it seems.

If you’d heard the current driver order on lap 4 without actually seeing the race, you’d believe they were pulling your leg rather than the information they’d actually given you.

That’s why rain and changeable, unpredictable weather causes such excitement though, as potentially boring races are turned completely around.

We can’t talk about this race without talking about Ocon’s work out front to keep Vettel behind under immense pressure with a slower car.

Equally, Alonso’s work to keep a very quick Hamilton behind almost certainly enabled Ocon to take his inaugural win and guarantee valuable points for Alpine in the Constructor’s battle.

Everyone’s seen the footage of Senna making his car as wide as the track against Mansell at Monaco and today Alonso channelled that.

Either that of the Alpine airbox is so wide their mid season update was to make the car match it.

George Russell really is a class act. Upon seeing that Williams had a real opportunity to use the pace in the car along with the difficulty to overtake and most importantly, using his car to help Latifi no matter the personal cost to his result, the Brit immediately got onto the team to say he had no problems.

If he needed a contract, that’d certainly make him more favourable, and karma gave him his first points, an excellent job all round.

A lot of tongue in cheek with this one. As much as it’s funny to laugh about thing’s always go Hamilton’s way, the 7-time champion looked completely drained by the end of the race.

It’s remarkable after how hard he had to push after a minor mistake that he actually physically made it to the podium.

Maybe they just didn’t remember the protocol after winning, maybe they’ve just got into the Olympic spirit and created a new sport of F1 Biathlon (On the cards for Paris 2024?). Either way, watching the second race to the podiums was both sublime and ridiculous.

And that’s it before the summer break. Formula 1 does as it does and after the antics of qualifying, offers up an even higher bar for the drama level to clear. Hopefully it’ll simmer down in the time off and the drivers will amp up the drama all over again. When it does, we’ll be here to round it all up with the help of the internet.

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 British Grand Prix

Well. That was an interesting one. Depending on what side of the fence you give your support, this weekend will have been either a dream or a nightmare, given the last few races. A brand new format is in the mix now and it’s fair to say there were mixed reactions to both that, and a very controversial incident on-track. The tangle between the champion and pretender to the throne dominated the memes so we’ll be taking a little bit of a different look this week.

Without any further ado, let’s get into it.

1

Posted on Reddit by djehutinakht

Out of context, this looks bad from the 7 time Champion. Given a small amount of thought though, and the circumstances become clear. Hamilton was told Verstappen was ok, and had served his penalty, finally getting a win after 5 races being on the back foot. At home in front of a full crowd of fans would have felt unbelievable in comparison.

As much as the circumstances aren’t ideal to be praising Leclerc, the guy is doing what’s required to the letter. The Monegasque picked up the pieces after an accident in front, got past Bottas in what should be a faster Mercedes, and kept Hamilton behind for almost every lap and taking an unlikely win. Top marks from us.

3

Posted on Reddit by TheOriginalNozar

Say what you want about the penalty (and canvassing the reaction online, people have) The stewards awarded him it, he took it, and he happened to win the race after it. End of story. Going down the route of applying penalties based on effect, while feeling ‘right’ is a dangerous slope, and would do more harm than good.

4

Posted on Reddit by assetsmanager

Clearly referencing the email Toto claimed to send to the race director (Not sure why, he’s not the stewards who actually decide the penalties)

This diagram misses a few things, such as similar moves by Lewis on Leclerc and if memory serves, Kovalainen in 2008 with no issue. At the speed and fuel loads both drivers approached the corner, neither has peak performance available. Lewis was also completely alongside and therefore had command of the width of the track and Verstappen could have gone wider as he had at Abbey, the first corner of the lap.

It’s also somewhat different to compare the Leclerc incident with Verstappen, as the gap in tyre grip was much wider. Amazingly, Leclerc had less tyre grip despite leading. Perhaps that’s a weakness of the Ferrari, but either way, Leclerc was forced to yield, rather than having the choice not to.

6

Posted on Reddit by HarryNyquist

Even after the controversial events that cause Leclerc to be the leader for 50 laps, hearing he was losing power isn’t what any racing fan wants to hear. When expecting a clean dogfight between the sport’s best, mechanical trouble always leaves a fan feeling cheated.

F1’s red flag rules dictate a like-for-like replacement of parts in red flag conditions. This leaves only two possibilities when using duct tape to fix a £150,000 piece of carbon; Mercedes had no identical replacements, or they believed they could save money for the cost cap by using a quick fix.

We touched on this, but Michael Masi has no say over the decisions of the stewards. To hear both team principals appeal to the race director seemed a little childish, or worse, football-esque.

While we’d love to believe the Spidercam (That is genuinely its name) was actually a flying squirrel only found in North Buckinghamshire and trained by Pinewood studios, alas, it’s not THAT cool and it’s just a marvellous shot we’ve had since 2011.

10

Posted on Reddit by hjaltewm

While a lot has been made of the penalty being too lenient, or that somehow the stewards favour the champion, the fact is that he commentators are racing drivers allowed their own opinion. Even on the main coverage, and in the paddock, there was a huge disparity in opinions. That’s a set of differences we have to respect.

With that controversy well and truly over. Oh who are we kidding. This will rumble on for at least the next couple of weeks. Coincidentally, that’s when F1 is back and we’re sure nothing controversial will happen there.

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix

After the race last week that we were, we’ll say treated to, the likelihood that the Red Bull Ring would throw up a dud again was very low. Similarly, so were Lewis Hamilton’s chances of success after some unseen damage neutered his entire race to the point not even a full meme was dedicated to covering that particular detail as Verstappen yet again extended his championship lead, giving the Brit a massive mountain to climb at Silverstone and beyond.

Let’s see what did make the cut on the internet this week.

1

Posted on Reddit by CapnMorgan03

Its seemed that either F1 fans have short memories or that F1’s nature is that of dominance by one team that hits its interpretation of the ruleset out of the park.

Given his history with pushing drivers trying to overtake to the limit let’s say, it looked like Hamilton had been giving Norris some lessons in keeping a Red Bull behind. The threshold for a penalty seems to have dropped in the time between those teachings however, so the 7-time champion might want to take care doing the same.

After being pushed off the track courtesy of Norris earlier in the race, you’d think the Mexican would have been more sympathetic to drivers going round the outside. Alas, Perez gives as hard as he gets and decided to double dip on the staunch defence for good measure.

3

Posted on Reddit by BSForFun

They say you should learn from your mistakes but apparently Checo and Yuki weren’t in the mood to take on board any lessons and decided to try and get away with a second infraction. The stewards didn’t look too kindly on that however.

4

Posted on Reddit by 33Marthijs46

Another meme here taking aim at Perez, but to be honest, the level of hypocrisy in the Red Bull cockpit was huge as Sergio kept pushing Leclerc over the white lines after being on the receiving end.

Good on Lando, what a sense of humour to take a tongue in cheek jibe at the Dutch fans and the Netherland’s national colours, which were obviously based of William of Orange’s love for the Woking-based racing outfit.

6

If you’d tuned in to the race having not seen the start and not taken a glance at the driver tower graphic, you could have forgotten Verstappen was even in the race as, compared to last week, chaos ensued behind.

That won’t worry the championship leader however. He was well out of trouble out front.

7

Posted on Reddit by MR_GhastFace

Given his remorse later on in the day, it’s clear Alonso has a heart and can obviously feel for the British driver having had to take away his points. It is however Formula 1 and the Spanish young driver can’t afford to leave points on the table for the sake of sentiment.

The flipside of Russell fighting so hard for his chance of points for the first time would have been stressful anyway, were it not the 2-time world champion and only a mere mortal F1 driver.

9

Posted on Reddit by TheUncleTiki

As Max took the victory is seemed a sandstorm took over the circuit, but apparently it was just flares from the, let’s say enthusiastic, fans. Given much more and the drivers wouldn’t have been able to see.

10

It’s been a horrible trip to Austria for Ocon and his new contract has done nothing for his results and if anything has cursed them. This all came to a head when he was sandwiched, Indian Jones style and had to retire before reaching the 4th corner. Given how badly Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was, maybe Harrison Ford should have taken some pointers.

With that, that’s the third meme review of the race in as many weeks. We take a break now as does F1 until we return to the home of British motorsport in 2 weeks time at Silverstone. We hope you come back and take a look then.

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Styrian Grand Prix

Owing to the changes to calendar forced on F1 as the effects of COVID-19 still ripple through the world, the F1 community at least get’s a second visit to the lovely Red Bull Ring in Styria, Austria. Normally this old-school track throws up some great racing, though unfortunately for us, spoiler alert, uncharacteristically this year it didn’t.

That wasn’t the only thing to be out of character, as Lewis Hamilton struggled to keep pace with the commanding Max Verstappen. Given the fact that he probably is the next big thing for Formula 1, him and his current crop of ultra-young and ultra-fast drivers raising through the ranks, it only makes sense we look at the only form of humour they understand. Well, the only form we can write an article about anyway, let’s take a look.

It was a torrid affair for Gasly’s first lap in Styria.

Tagged by Leclerc not 500m before the second real corner of the race, then struggling not to get caught in other driver’s paths.

What actually happened to him after turn 3 is something we’d love to tell you about, but for reasons that will become clear, we can’t.

3

There’s been some genuinely disappointing TV directing this season, admittedly by a TV crew who’d been forced on a 2 year sabbatical by the current state of the world.

The medicine we didn’t know we needed however, was catching the septuple world champion as the camera cut to him, mid-slide. Mighty impressive work from the person behind the desk if ever we’ve seen it.

Given the situational awareness F1 drivers usually possess while testing the limits of adhesion dynamically over 90 minutes, all while balancing strategy and on-track battles will never cease to amaze us, who usually hit a wall if we even think about changing the F1 game’s brake bias settings while taking the gentle right of Curva Grande, this question from Lewis was a little concerning.

Those of you out there who do support the Brit, don’t worry, he was back to working out the implications of any pitstop he made by the end of the race.

Oh to be George Russell. Even with what will be the fastest Formula 1 car available to drive for a long time he still suffered a setback from bad luck. This same luck struck again when he was painfully close to not just scraping points, but winning himself and Williams a good haul of the stuff that keeps the lights on at the end of the day.

6

Posted on Reddit by Jonnymalax

As we alluded to earlier, we’d love to tell you exactly what happened on lap 1 after turn 3 and exactly what happened to Gasly’s lower wishbone.

Was it just a failure from Leclerc’s contact, a spontaneous failure from a manufacturing error or Gasly bringing the car back too fast and ruining what little chance he had of a decent finish? We may never know.

7

Posted on Reddit by Lab_17

It’s happened again. Another race, another chance of rain, another set of drivers getting wet with both champagne and water from the sky rather then the track not half an hour before.

Given the hype that surrounds the weekend when there’s even a chance of rain, which is warranted to be perfectly honest, it seems the clouds hear about it and decide not to rain on anyone’s parade.

Given the recent performances he’s shown and the behaviour of all team members involved with Bottas, a schoolboy error in the pitlane was the least the Finn needed. The antics cost him 3 places and a front row start, possibly shaking this race up entirely, and giving it the spice it sorely needed.

9

Posted on Reddit by HangmanAM

Making the best of a bad situation (and capitalising on an uncharacteristic Red Bull pitstop error) Bottas made good way into the race until Perez was unleashed with a fast Red Bull and fresh tyres.

The only luck the Austrian drinks maker seemed to lack this weekend was a safety car to bunch the pack and help Perez overturn the eventual half-second gap.

10

Posted on Reddit by Ikatcher

There’s been a number of gestures by each team looking to rub their rivals in their own successes (Formation Mercedes at Monza after a 1-2 come to mind) so this isn’t anything new for us. As you can probably guess from our tone, we won’t condemn it either, as Red Bull deserved the win and the celebration on at least partly home turf. They earned the celebration.

An unlikely, yet always possible, quiet affair by F1 standards in Spielberg. That’s the first of the Austrian double bill, can Milton Keynes step up and make it a double bull on the podium. They’ll certainly hope so. We just hope there’s more make fun of as only the internet can. Until next time.

Someone recently called Paul Ricard the world’s largest kaleidoscope, not sure who would do that, certainly not this author. Normally that’s the most notable about the circuit just outside Marseille. This year however, we were treated to a spectacle or the most pressure filled variety, the race result decided right at the death.

Given it’s not always been the most interesting race, before being subjected to that whirlwind of a grand prix, we were dreading putting this together. Not today. The meme gods were smiling on us as is was all happening out on track. Let’s get into it.

Where have we seen that before? In all seriousness, Red Bull played a blinder to pull off what Hamilton and Bottas were asking to be protected from all along.

7

Red Bull really stole this style of win out from under Mercedes, who in contrast, have looked quite uncomfortable and hitting a number of stumbling blocks.

The once well-oiled operation has started to seem a little like it’s got a spanner in the works. Metaphors, similes and other literary techniques aside, the silver arrows really need to get back on track next time out. If not, this championship may run away from them.

It’s only been on the calendar for 5 years and 4 races (Thank you Coronavirus) but the race on the coast of the Caspian sea has quickly become an instant classic. While not delivering an entirely consistent spectacle to the racing, usually resulting in a lull towards the middle of the race, it always delivers a unique and interesting challenge for the drivers, which is excellent for us.

What looked like a commanding race for the rampant Red Bulls was turned on its head after some tyre trouble and a 3-lap sprint to the end left us all out of breath. Another twist in this championship’s story where a certain knight might rue the mistakes made.

It’s just a pity they couldn’t complete a great weekend with a 1-2 win not seen at Milton Keynes for a long, long while.

Monaco has, can and does produce exciting races. Sometimes, and usually with help of rain or a safety car. Other times, you’re left as a viewer hoping for a burst water main at the Casino to spice up the racing and bring out some wet tyres at the very least.

Alas, the full 78 laps passed this year with not one hint of a stoppage as the drivers were all alarmingly well behaved (Perhaps under orders not to break the car in case of budget cap issues). Therefore it was a surprise to see the teams doing all the breaking.

It’s Monaco, so this is absolutely no surprise to anyone whose seen something 2m wide go down normal streets. Add to that the fact that the barriers add the chance of being fired into the next barrier and with cars that can’t follow, this spectacle was almost guaranteed.

At least we got to see some great drivers in the points right?…Right???

The Mercedes doesn’t like to follow, Hamilton struggled to get going all weekend and as mentioned previously, it’s Monaco.

Hamilton would have got very acquainted with the rear of the Alpha Tauri running on the power of dreams as Mercedes had a nightmare.

Those of us old enough to remember Hamilton’s less successful years (Yes, us young millennials are the ones who put this together Zoomers)

Will know all about the whinging that can come from the 7-time champion. The counterpoint to that is Valtteri getting a freak failure we’ve never seen before when he actually has a handle on Lewis. The Finn must be questioning what exactly is going on, because as even  the Knight of F1 once said when the dice never seemed to roll his way in 2014, “It’s getting beyond a joke”.

This meme isn’t entirely wrong in their assessment, initially there was a whole host of interesting things happening in the Monaco Grand Prix.

Those things just ended after the pit stops. Leclerc’s drivetrain issues meant he didn’t start, opening up a run for Bottas on Max. Hamilton would have to fight through the pack and Bottas could have taken some fight to Red Bull.

After Lap 30 or so though, we were doing the dishes and wondering when Indy Qualifying was on. At least the championship is back on again.

First off for this, the disclaimers. TV directing, particularly live, is difficult to do well with good timing and queuing up footage when you don’t think anything interesting will happen a few seconds in advance is also difficult and at times things may go wrong.

That now out of the way.

What the hell were they thinking by cutting away from the only bloody interesting thing to see all afternoon? Criminal.

Given the expected outcome when the post-race interviews were being decided, it would be a fair assumption Hamilton’s friend, incomparable Tennis champion Serena Williams, would be knocked off her stride as we all were not seeing him anywhere near the podium.

It often seems insane that a finely tuned race team operation can be completely undone by a part that simply refuses to do just that.

All that expense and the hardware provided in flat pack furniture seems more reliable. F1 however is a sport where grams saved make seconds and given the balance of probabilities, a lighter thread on a wheelnut is worth the times it’s actually going to fail when it matters. On this occasion, it just collapsed the possibility of a win for Mercedes.

We’ve given this particular issue a Ferrari Mechanic’s look thus far, but whoever was weighing up which option to take for Sunday needs retraining in basic risk.

Ferrari sacrificed a guaranteed 6th place start with room for improvement for the possibility of pole. As much as that matters around the principality, does it really justify taking such a large risk. It really has been too long for a win at Ferrari.

There’s been a whole lot of criticism and negativity in this piece so far, so to take us home let’s add in the wholesome addition of two former team-mates who genuinely seemed elated to see each other do well. It’s not a sight seen often in the F1 paddock such is the competition, but it’s most refreshing when it appears. Absolutely brilliant, I love it.

Given how he could have reacted, going home or off to have an ice cream on his yacht for example, Charles Leclerc as always distinguished himself, going back to both celebrate the podium with the team and then congratulate Carlos.

Many drivers wouldn’t have done close to that and don’t get distinguished praise as a class act like the Monegasque. Brilliant to see.

Thank goodness the spectacle of a Monaco Sunday in May has come and gone. As much as Monaco must stay on the calendar, it’s not exactly a secret it doesn’t usually set the world alight in action. Moving swiftly on as a good few drivers are want to do at this point, from the Cote d’Azur to the Caspian Sea and the streets of Baku. It’s Azerbaijan up next and we simply cannot wait.

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix

As always with a race at Catalunya, as nice as the circuit may be to drive in isolation, we were buckled in for a ninety minute bore-fest similar to Portugal’s second half.

We were, however, pleasantly surprised to be so wrong. There’s always different styles of F1 race that bring the X-Factor that never seem to appear when showing a sceptic the sport. Crazy weather, high speed duels, differing concepts racing to the finish or when completely different strategies are so close in outcome by the end a winner cannot be predicted. Even watching a complete masterclass, by someone who just clicks with their car in a way some drivers seldom can, has its value.

This week we were treated to two marginal strategies coming to a head, catching one team out and putting the other on top.

Whatever the race though, there’s bound to be something to laugh at about it. Here’s our 10 favourites post-race.

It was a nightmare of a day for pit crews up and down the pitlane.

Red Bull took 100% longer than their normal stops and Alfa Romeo almost sent Gio out on a set of tyres that came pre-punctured. (Well done that mechanic for spotting that). Alpine did an outstanding job however, getting Alonso back out in front of the Aston.

After Imola, it’s been a bit suspicious with how Mercedes are able to keep Hamilton in contention.

Maybe this is how, or at least that’s how the sceptics seem to think.

3

Posted on Reddit by mattialeonetti

After the slightly dull round at Portimao, the teams mannged to really spice up the status quo finish we’re coming to expect. However, the Merc of just Lewis must be that good to fix the result we’ve come to expect. Either that or Hamilton is actually the talent he’s looked all his career.

4

Posted on Reddit by sge_freaky

It’s looked like quite the fall from grace in the first 4 races of this season for two drivers who have, let’s not forget, won 6 world championships between them and been in contention for a further 4. Squabbling over 2 places out of the points isn’t anything even the greatest sceptic of the two drivers really wants to see.

After being humbled with a strategy in Hungary of 2019, reminiscent of a good TV plot twist, piecing things that in hindsight look obvious.

Maybe it’s a little harsh to say that Red Bull should have seen the stars aligning for Mercedes to pull a near identical move on them.  At home it seemed to be as we say, obvious.

6

Posted on Reddit by GoldDecision7

If the stars were aligning for Mercedes, they were three pointed stars, to say the least. Lewis Hamilton’s incredible speed, Mercedes’ magic strategy and tardiness at Red Bull all combined to give the Knight the victory.

Loving this new format that’s come about.

After Milton Keynes’ F1 team has made the best of not having the best car, through strategy might we add. It shouldn’t take Red Bull to get back on-from with figuring out when to pit and when to push. We look forward to those days when they do reappear.

Stroll took a bad rap very early on in his career for his status as what can only be described as a pay driver. The revelation, in a bad way, of Haas’ second driver and some undeniably solid performances and moves have re-shaped our opinion of the Canadian.

9

Posted on Reddit by adit23281

You just got the feeling that the Alpine on Alonso could have really done with about 3 fewer laps before he just got mugged by everyone behind him, dropping him to an anonymous position by the end.

10

Not only is the subject of this meme slow and looks to be a terrible person, he also seems to be completely unaware of what he’s doing in a race. To quote Martin Brundle from Portimao “That’s the Leader”. Running around in last is one thing, genuinely affecting the outcome of races for the good drivers is another and it’s showing what the limit of talent really is.

So, once in a blue moon it turns out Catalunya can spice up the action in a way it normally doesn’t. Normally the circuit can be as boring and offer as little in terms of on-track action as Monaco. Coincidentally and conveniently for this particular outro, that’s the race up next. F1 jets off to the principality for the jewel in the crown and we’ll be back here in 2 weeks irreverently wrapping it all up. See you then

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix

Before we get into the memes, as a result of the last half of the Portuguese Grand Prix, I’d like to apologise for tempting fate 2 weeks ago.

It wasn’t a complete bore-fest initially, though!

They say it’s not the destination that matters, it’s the journey you take to get there, and before the pitstops, that journey was full of twists, turns and sudden gusts of drama. Much like Portimao right?

Now, with all that set, let’s rank the top 10.

Car number 9 had an outstanding race for all the wrong reasons. For reasons that’ll become clear soon, the racing’s all mouth.

Just ask Alonso

It must be unfamiliar territory for Hamilton, having the Red Bull driven by anyone other than Verstappen actually be in front of him on the track.

No doubt this is delightful for the Red Bull pitwall, finally with a competitive 2nd car.

7

Posted on Reddit by HangmanAM

For all the same reasons Red Bull need a competitive 2nd car, a few years ago it would be inconceivable to see the second car in a team attack the other the way Lewis did, with a fantastic overtake around the outside on Bottas.

We’re quick to sing Russell’s praises around here (And quite rightly so he’s excellent if not a god).

In a car described as ‘Peaky’ in traffic, managing to top the runners after 11th place in qualifying was a good achievement.

There was a lot to see in the first half of the Grand Prix, with some spectacular passing up and down the grid.

The second half however, as Mercedes took hold ended up as a snooze fest.

10

Posted on Reddit by 4160_Shine

Thanks to Mercedes looking a little more like themselves in the latter half of the race, the Portuguese Grand Prix seemed more like a dud all told.

All those laughs now wrapped up, we can only hope Catalunya makes a rare exciting race out of a rarely exciting race. It’s just 5 days until the cars are back out, just over the Iberian border.

Top 10 Memes of the 2021 Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Formula 1 made its remarkably early return to Europe this week but that didn’t catch out the memers at all. 3 weeks after their last time out they were ready to go and poke a little fun at the world’s best drivers.

An action packed race from lights to flag both makes this job easier and more difficult. In one way, there’s always something to laugh at and yet curating the Top 10 is an issue. (Please have interesting races, I swear I didn’t mean it really).

Let’s get into the meme’s before fate notices.

1

Posted on Reddit by Brokkoli-adm

That was a big hit. No, not the collision between drivers on the Mercedes payroll.

We almost heard the Austrian’s thump from here.

We won’t lie, we’ve been waiting to shoehorn in a meme of this format. Not without having an opinion on the post-crash conduct by both drivers.

Given the size of the impacts, the particular corner the two drivers collided at, and the risk of concussion, a bonk on the head by Russell has a bad look to it.

4

Posted on Reddit by Brunlorenz

There’s a bit of a “Valtteri, It’s James” vibe going on here (at least that’s where my mind went to when I saw this one). Mercedes wouldn’t call for an accident to help another driver, this isn’t Singapore and it’s not 2008 for starters. The timing will always have us wondering though…Did they?

Russell (That’s how it’s spelled meme-makers), really was a fly in Mercedes’ ointment, causing the almost complete implosion of their race (Though then fixing it, sort of?) Imola just doesn’t seem to click for him, 3rd time lucky?

Another outing for this format, and after the driver’s reactions in the aftermath, cooler heads may not always prevail when emotions are running high. Fortunately both drivers are unlikely to hold a grudge and will see both sides after they’ve calmed down a bit.

Even if Kimi was amazed by the events unfolding around him, I imagine he had the reaction “Oh, I remember going off there” in an incredibly monotone internal monologue.

It’s always a risky move swapping drivers to check which has more pace, but credit to Lando, he had the speed. Qualifying clearly played on his mind but after some wise words he went out on Sunday and smashed it with an excellent drive, showing the good side of team orders.

We made a prediction in the last list of laughs that this was going to be remarkably competitive F1 World Championship and it is not disappointing. Can it deliver in 2 weeks time in Portimao? We bloody hope so.
