Cavani Christmas Cracker Fires United Into Carabao Cup Semis
Uruguayan hitman Edinson Cavani curled in a Christmas cracker that broke the deadlock and broke Evertonian hearts as Manchester United marched into a Carabao Cup semi final with Manchester City thanks to a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park. Anthony Martial wrapped up the win with a stoppage time strike to seal the deal.
United bossed the opening 25 minutes, not giving the hosts a moments rest, and should have been three goals to the good but for several spurned chances from Cavani.
Everton wrestled their way back into the contest, putting the visitors under pressure before half time.
The second half didn’t live up to the first, and as time wound down, the quarter final seemed destined for a penalty shoot out. In the 88th minute up stepped Cavani, slotting home the strike that would send Solskjaer’s men into another semi final and another showdown with neighbours Manchester City.
“It was cagey at times — there and back and flowing, attacking and defending but you’re always confident if it opens up a bit with the pace we have,” said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer.
“Cavani should’ve scored three in the first half but he is a top striker, movement, quality and the goal was excellent.”
“We’ve had three semifinals the last year, of course, and it’s a step not far enough. This year again, as last year, we play City in the semifinals, so let’s see how we fare.”
While it’s too early to claim United are back amongst England’s elite, they do have a chance to take the next step and go one better than they managed in 2019.
