The Top 10 Memes of the 2020 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
In the strangest of F1 seasons, postponed from the now synonymous March Melbourne kick-off and 17 races after a hefty delay, we’ve reached the end of a whirlwind F1 season full of intrigue and wonder.
As the sun rises? (Day to night races really mess with the metaphors) on another Abu Dhabi grand prix, hard working memers found the last laughs available before the winter break.
The elephant in the room here is of course the usual dreariness from Yas Marina’s appearance on the calendar. May we apologise in advance for any wood chips you find in your regularly scheduled meme content, we were really scraping the bottom of the barrel to get a full complement of memes. So without further ado, these are the Top 10 Memes of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton has had the lion’s share of strategy calls this year, having both preferred strategies and the ability to make his own calls. However at the last race of the season he finally saw what it’s like having no options.

Probably due to some of the learnings from the Mercedes’ issues in Sakhir, no issues were exposed this weekend. This is little consolation to Russell of course, who had to drag around the Williams yet again.

Think of this as a teaser for some of the later rankings because, as usual, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a snooze. A true example of not judging a good looking circuit by its layout.

Max essentially ran away with the race after Mercedes had to turn down their engines to ensure a strong finish. Only Mercedes could back off and still take 2nd and 3rd. Ricciardo did his best to spoil his ex-teammate’s ‘Grand Slam’ and pinched the fastest lap points right at the death.

It speaks volumes about the Abu Dhabi GP that a meme about how Ted Kravitz from Sky F1 couldn’t find gaps in radio traffic to report his findings has made it to this list.
Whether that’s because the race had all the excitement of a 20 mile tailback on the motorway or because we’ve got low standards for comedy, I’ll let you decide.

It’s been a rough season for Alex Albon, partially due to his own issues and some bad luck, but he seemed to need a couple more laps to spice up a part of the race but just didn’t have the speed early enough.
This probably plays into a certain Mexican driver’s hands, but then again, the stat sheet only remembers the result, not how you got there.

We personally feel this is projecting some slightly undeserved bad feeling towards Yas Marina Circuit (Sochi Autodrom exists, remember) as it’s not entirely up to the driver whether the gap in the barrier is large enough to fit an F1 car.
It did however bring out some much required excitement to a dreary end to the season.

As much as we’ve stated Albon’s finish might help Perez’ chances at a 2021 seat, his gearbox had other ideas, sounding like a bag of spanners as he pulled over. We hope to see him racing in 2021, but aren’t holding our breath.

It’s not a surprise that Yas Marina’s racing isn’t exactly amazing, but typically there’s usually something going on. This year had us actively questioning why the racing was so dull, save for the DRS assisted overtakes. DRS was definitely performing the heavy lifting for the season finale.

We’ve not made any secret of the fact we don’t like the lack of action that typically comes with the annual trip to the UAE, but this new format caught us off guard. We never thought we’d see the loudest sport on Earth relegated to the Headspace app.
